An overview of WSMA's many programs and services that help improve the practice of medicine for our members and their staff.
Legislative, regulatory and legal advocacy on important health issues for physicians and patients
We get results. Critical issues affecting physicians and patients are being decided in the Legislature, the governor’s office, state agencies, licensing boards and judicial branch. WSMA advocates in all arenas, both state and federal, and is a respected and powerful voice for the medical profession.
Leadership development and professional training opportunities—customized, accredited and available year-round
The WSMA builds strong leadership skills. We partner with the University of Washington Graduate Programs in Health Administration and UW Professional and Continuing Education to offer a 40-hour in-person and online leadership course. Our new dyad leadership course develops skills based on the ongoing operational needs of the physician and his/her administrative partner. The annual Leadership Development Conference features prominent speakers and breakout sessions that focus on topics of importance to physician leaders.
Legal expertise including the Physicians' Guide to Health Law
Members have access to staff attorneys for professional inquiries by phone or email. The Washington Physicians’ Guide to Health Law —a free member benefit valued at $350—is a summary of many laws commonly encountered in a medical practice, covering such issues as confidentiality, providing care to minors, medical records, closing a practice, living wills and much more.
Employment contract evaluation and licensure expertise
We protect your professional interests. We work closely with the Washington Medical Commission on matters that affect physicians’ licenses, including professional discipline, Commission policies, legislative actions and rules the Commission adopts.
Expert practice guidance and resources
The WSMA supports your practice through free and discounted CME, compliance resources and personal practice support. We offer reimbursement assistance—when claims are denied or delayed, the WSMA mediates with insurance companies through direct intervention so our members get paid.
Award-winning work to improve quality and access to care
WSMA’s three-pronged Know Your Choices - Ask Your Doctor initiative, which includes Choosing Wisely®, ER is for Emergencies and Honoring Choices® Pacific Northwest, promotes improved communication between patients and physicians to ensure the right care is delivered in the right place at the right time. Take advantage of WSMA’s free patient resources such as advance directives and POLST.
Discounted liability insurance
Most members receive a $300 discount on their premium if insured by Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company.
