AI in Health Care
The WSMA recognizes the increasing presence of artificial intelligence in
medicine. In 2023, the American Medical Association issued principles on
the development, deployment, and use of AI in medicine, while the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services took its first step toward
regulation via rulemaking. As of this writing, Congress has begun
discussions around introducing legislation at the federal level.
In response to the changing landscape, the WSMA’s 2023 House of Delegates
approved Resolution B-3: Ensuring Non-Discriminatory Use of Artificial
Intelligence in Medicine, which resulted in the creation of an AI work
group tasked with developing WSMA’s position on AI in medicine.
WSMA’s Position on AI in Health Care
The WSMA has established principles to guide its work as it
engages with stakeholders and policymakers to ensure the perspective of
physicians informs and influences the dialogue as AI technology develops. The principles cover:
- General health care AI principles
- Patient-facing AI
- Bias
- Payment and reimbursement
- Liability
- Clinical decision-making
