Vaccines and HB 1531: Advocating for Science and Evidence-Based Medicine

In response to uncertainty at the federal level and increased public hesitancy around vaccines, this session the public health community brought forward House Bill 1531, sponsored by Rep. Dan Bronoske (D-Lakewood), to ensure that at the state and local levels, public health responses to communicable diseases and communications on vaccines continue to be guided by the best available science. The bill passed the Washington Legislature primarily with Democratic support and was signed into law by Gov. Bob Ferguson.

With this legislation, Washington's public health community sought to ensure education remained a critical tool in preventing and controlling the spread of communicable diseases and to preserve the public's access to science-driven information, including information related to vaccines.

Despite the bill's straightforward language, HB 1531 was politicized and, during the initial bill hearing, those skeptical of vaccines voiced strong opposition, nearly killing the bill. The WSMA supported our public health partners in educating lawmakers on the importance of this bill and the role of public health. This timely and important safeguard in addressing communicable diseases with evidence-based measures was a policy win for the WSMA, public health, and all Washingtonians.
