About the Course

This course is longitudinal (your progress will be measured over time), and multimodal (the course features different methods of learning), allowing learners to have multiple touchpoints on different aspects of emotional intelligence, allowing for deep understanding and opportunities to apply skills in practice.

Whether you're seeking to enhance your leadership abilities, strengthen your clinical relationships, or simply enrich your personal life, this course offers a comprehensive toolkit for unlocking the power of emotional intelligence. This course is available to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and all other clinicians looking to increase their emotional intelligence. Whether you are already a leader or considering a leadership role, you can benefit from this course.

Objectives

  • Define and understand emotional intelligence.
  • Describe the impact of emotional intelligence on personal success, patient care, team culture, and leadership.
  • Understand and assess participants’ own emotional intelligence strengths and areas of opportunity.
  • Appraise the impact of power and privilege on demonstrating emotional intelligence skills.
  • Apply emotional intelligence skills in a variety of professional contexts (mindfulness, humility, self-awareness, empathy, compassion, and goal setting).

Instructors

The course is co-led by Nina Willow, MD, and Amy Mohelnitzky, PA-C.

Nina Willow, MD

Nina Willow, MD, (she/her) is a seasoned family physician with 28 years of experience: 18 in high-acuity urgent care and 10 in community medicine for immigrant and refugee populations. With over a decade devoted to enhancing patient satisfaction, clinical efficiency, and physician well-being, she adeptly coaches health care professionals of all levels. Known for her genuine, humorous approach, she guides colleagues through burnout and self-doubt, emphasizing the pivotal role of clinicians in patient care. For the past 18 years, she has served a diverse community in Seattle, including LGBTQIA+ and homeless individuals, alongside her work with Kaiser Permanente HMO patients. Nina is the mom of two launching young adults, a writer, and multimedia artist.

Amy Mohelnitzky, PA-C

Amy Mohelnitzky, PA-C, (she/her) is the assistant medical director of Kaiser Permanente Bellevue Urgent Care and leads the Clinician-Patient-Communication program at Kaiser Washington, guiding new clinicians in compassionate care. With 18+ years in health care, including nine in behavioral health research and nine as a primary care and urgent care physician assistant, she also mentors local physician assistant students. Amy serves as the first physician assistant, certified on the peer review committee, ensuring an equitable culture. Her research focuses on behavior change interventions for smoking cessation, depression, obesity, and family health using cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Amy holds a master’s in education, is a certified diabetes prevention program coach, personal trainer, ultra-runner, and devoted mom.

Each session is protected under WSMA's CQIP as recognized by the Washington State Department of Health and pursuant to RCW 70.225.040. By registering, you agree to maintain the confidentiality of the discussions pursuant to RCW 43.70.510, RCW 70.41.200, and RCW 4.24.250.

Accreditation with Commendation

The Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The WSMA designates this Other activity (blend of live activity and enduring material) for a maximum of 23 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds are available for live event registration depending on when the refund is requested in relation to the start of the course.

  • 91 days or more until start of event: 100% refund less a $100 processing fee per person
  • 61–90 days until start of event: 75% refund
  • 31–60 days until start of event: 25% refund
  • 30 days or less until start of event: no refund

The WSMA reserves the right to cancel the course. If so, preregistered participants will be notified and full refunds provided. No-shows will receive no refund. Registrations may not be transferred to another person at any time. All refunds will be issued to the original form of payment.
