WSMA Urges Streamlined Opioid Prescribing Rules for Washington Physicians

The WSMA, joined by physician leaders, academic medical centers, and specialty medical societies from across the state, has submitted a stakeholder letter to the Washington Medical Commission encouraging a simpler, more accessible approach to Washington’s opioid prescribing rules for allopathic physicians and physician assistants.

The letter acknowledges the commission’s commitment to promoting safe, evidence-based opioid prescribing while improving patient access to appropriate pain management. It also recognizes that the existing rules, which took effect in 2019, have created a regulatory framework that many physicians find complex and administratively burdensome. The coalition believes a clearer, more streamlined framework would reduce regulatory uncertainty and better support physicians in providing appropriate, evidence-based pain management.

Rather than continuing to expand the existing regulations, the coalition recommends that the commission separate legal requirements from clinical guidance by:

  • Adopting a concise rule that clearly identifies physicians’ enforceable legal obligations when prescribing opioids.
  • Developing a companion opioid prescribing guideline containing clinical recommendations, best practices, explanatory information, and other educational resources.

The commission will discuss the proposal during its Aug. 10 workshop, which is open to the public. The WSMA will participate in the discussion and continue to advocate for a regulatory framework that promotes safe opioid prescribing while ensuring patients retain access to appropriate pain management.
