HCA Releases Medicaid Toolkit Ahead of H.R. 1 Eligibility Changes

Learn about upcoming Medicaid eligibility changes under H.R. 1 and access the Washington Health Care Authority’s new toolkit to help physician practices support patients, navigate new coverage requirements, and maintain access to care.

Last year, H.R. 1 was passed by Republicans in Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump. Key provisions of the law that impact Medicaid eligibility are going into effect in the coming months. The Health Care Authority has released a toolkit with information and resources for practices and the patients they serve.

Beginning Oct. 1, new restrictions on Medicaid eligibility based on immigration status will be imposed. On Jan. 1, 2027, work requirements and process changes to coverage renewals and retroactive coverage take effect. Taken together, thousands of Washington residents are expected to lose Medicaid coverage.

The physician community has a key role to play in helping patients retain access to coverage. The toolkit provides fact sheets and key messages to support patients in considering their coverage options. The WSMA is meeting regularly with state and federal policymakers and will continue to advocate for maintaining patients’ access to care.
