Incorporating a diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging lens to everything we do.

The WSMA is committed to building health equity and eliminating disparities to improve health care in Washington. As part of that commitment, and recognizing that we are responsible for ensuring that all member voices are heard, the WSMA is incorporating a diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging lens to everything we do. To help guide this work, 2021-22 WSMA President Mika Sinanan, MD, PhD, implemented a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee charged with informing WSMA policy development as well as the association’s demographics to ensure that we are a truly representative organization.

Purposes of the Committee

The purposes of the committee include, but are not limited to:

• Serving as an advisory body to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee, and all standing committees.
• Reviewing and making recommendations on proposed resolutions and current policies to redesign structures, policy, and practices to achieve DEIB goals.
• Engaging in restorative projects that address historical injustices and advance DEIB within the Association and in the house of medicine more broadly.

Committee Members

The DEIB Committee Chair is recommended by the committee, elected by the House of Delegates, and serves on the board of trustees.

The DEIB Committee shall consist of no more than fifteen (15) members, all of whom are appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of Trustees. Each member is appointed to a three (3) year term and may serve up to two (2) terms consecutively. The appointments are staggered to ensure that the DEIB Committee has new members each year.
