Team-Based Leadership Course

The WSMA Team-Based Leadership Course is a month-long course with three live educational workshop days. This course is intended for physicians and their administrative partners who wish to improve team function and achieve greater operational success within their clinical system.

Why it's important

Safe, cost-effective, and quality care can only be achieved when physicians and administrators are strong partners in leadership. Forging such a partnership effectively connects the culture of patient care with the culture of business, yielding better outcomes and real change.

Teamwork is necessary to achieve better outcomes. Having the whole team on the same page for the right reasons is crucial to drive real change.

How it works

The WSMA Team-Based Leadership Course is designed as a working “retreat” focusing on three aspects of leadership development:

Assessment of current individual, dyad, and team function, with attention to opportunities for improvement.
Construction of a remediation process using classroom-based and health care facility-based resources to plan for individual, dyad, and team growth.
An evaluation of progress toward goals at the completion of the course.

This WSMA Team-Based Leadership Course develops leadership knowledge and skills based on the ongoing operational needs of the physician and their administrative partner. The course is adapted to fit the specific clinical culture of participating teams. At the end of the course, participants will have a greater understanding of how to enhance leadership and operational success within their clinical system.

Course details

The virtual-only Team-Based Leadership Course will be held on May 9-June 6, 2025. The first two days will be live virtual sessions on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and May 10, 2025. The final live virtual session is on Friday, June 6, 2025. The max capacity for the course is 20 participants. Individuals or group/system teams are encouraged to apply. If you are unable to attend all three sessions, then it’s best to register for the Team-Based Leadership Course when you can. The tuition for the course is: WSMA member in team: $1600/person; non-member team: $2100/person.

Instructor

This course is led by Edward A. Walker, MD, MHA, professor emeritus in the departments of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and health services at the University of Washington in Seattle and senior physician advisor for the WSMA Center for Leadership Development.

Prerequisite

To register for the WSMA Team-Based Leadership Course, physicians must have completed the WSMA Physician Leadership Course or be on a leadership track within their practice or organization. Learn more about the Physician Leadership Course.

Cancellation policy

Refunds are available for live event registration depending on when the refund is requested in relation to the start of the course.

91 days or more until start of event: a 100% refund less a $100 processing fee per person
61 – 90 days until start of event: a 75% refund
31-60 days until start of event: a 25% refund
30 days or less until start of event: no refund

The WSMA reserves the right to cancel the course. If so, preregistered participants will be notified and full refunds provided. No-shows will receive no refund. Registrations may not be transferred to another person at any time. A participant may transfer registration one time to the next available course if space permits. All subsequent transfers of registration will incur a change fee of $250. All refunds will be issued to the original form of payment.

For in-person courses, the WSMA cannot be held responsible for other costs or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, travel agencies, or hotels.

Course goal

Improve the working relationship with your team partner by having those conversations you never seem to get around to having.

Schedule

Unit 1: How you function today and your imagined best future together (Day 1)

Current state: Where are we now, and where are we going?
Appreciative inquiry: We at our very best
Our “one big thing”: What’s the single best thing we could do to take us to the next level?
Personal style, vulnerability, and versatility: How do our personal styles help and hinder?
Emotional Intelligence: How does emotional intelligence improve our partnership?

Unit 2: Becoming the best we can be (Day 2)

Leadership competency analysis: where do we have strengths and weaknesses?
Dyad tune up and liberating structures: Improving our daily function and learning new tools.
Coaching to success, mental complexity, and decision-making: Support for difficult problems.
Overview of capstone and expectations: Design a capstone project that demonstrates how you’ll achieve your “one big thing.”

Unit 3: Working with your partner/team in real-time (3 weeks on your own)

Given you know your partner a little better now, work together on the capstone project that demonstrates how you’ll get to that next level.

Unit 4: Capstone (Day 3)

Present your project to your colleagues for feedback

The Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The WSMA designates this Live activity for a maximum of 19.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits^™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity

This activity meets the criteria for up to 19.5 hours of Category I CME Category I CME credit to satisfy the relicensure requirements of the Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission.

MOC Credit

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to:

19.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program;

<div class="col-md-12"> <div class="col-sm-5 pull-right" style="text-align: center;"><img src="/images/Newsletters/Weekly%20Rounds/ceo-rounds-article-graphic-2024-645x425px.png" class="pull-right" alt="CEO Rounds graphic" /></div> <h5>November 22, 2024</h5> <h2>Keeping A Watchful Eye on Both Washingtons</h2> <p>Jennifer Hanscom, CEO</p> <p>As your state medical association, the WSMA's primary focus is, necessarily, on our state-we keep a close eye on what's happening in Olympia and the decisions made at state agencies, in the Legislature, or by the governor, and how those actions may affect our members and their patients.</p> <p>At the same time, we can't-and don't-ignore what is happening in the other Washington.</p> <p>As last week's Advocacy Report newsletter highlighted, there are three bills before Congress, one each on Medicare payment, prior authorization, and telehealth, that are crucial to your work. We urge all members and their teams to make their voices heard on these proposals. Take a moment and reach out to your congressional representatives and Washington's two senators to push for passage of these bills before <a href="https://wsma.org/Shared_Content/News/Latest_News/2024/urgent-action-needed-on-bills-to-preserve-medicare-patients-access-to-care.aspx?_zs=B3aFd1&amp;_zl=N0Ew9">Congress adjourns for the year</a>.</p> <p>Additionally, we have heard from many of you with concerns regarding proposed cabinet appointments as the incoming Trump administration begins to take shape. These appointments include leadership roles overseeing Medicare, Medicaid, public health, and regulatory decisions, and have far-reaching implications for physicians and patients alike.</p> <p>Understanding the process of Senate confirmation and recess appointments is essential to advocate for leaders who prioritize patient care and the stability of our health care system.</p> <p>Here's a quick summary of the process: Under the U.S. Constitution, many high-ranking federal positions require Senate confirmation. The process is designed to ensure that appointees are qualified and reflect the nation's interests.</p> <p>How it works:</p> <ul> <li>Nomination: The president nominates an individual for a role.</li> <li>Committee hearings: Senate committees hold hearings to evaluate the nominee's qualifications, vision, and potential conflicts of interest.</li> <li>Full Senate vote: After the hearings, the nominee goes to the full Senate for a vote. A simple majority is needed for confirmation.</li> </ul> <p>This process enables the Senate to vet appointees thoroughly, ensuring accountability and transparency.</p> <p>There has been coverage in the media about possible recess appointments. When the Senate is not in session, the president can make recess appointments to fill vacancies temporarily. That process is outlined in Article II, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution.</p> <p>How it works:</p> <ul> <li>Appointment: During a Senate recess, the president appoints someone to a vacant position without waiting for Senate approval.</li> <li>Duration: The appointee serves until the end of the Senate's next session. If not confirmed by the Senate before this deadline, the position becomes vacant again.</li> <li>Controversy: Recess appointments can bypass Senate oversight temporarily, leading to tension between the executive and legislative branches.</li> </ul> <p>What lies ahead is anyone's guess, but the WSMA will monitor appointments and engage with Washington's senators to advocate for health care leaders who prioritize patient care and support the medical community. Physicians can amplify these efforts by staying informed, contacting your senators directly, and collaborating with professional organizations to ensure your voice is heard. As a constituent, you too can add your voice by contacting Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell.</p> <h3>2025 Legislative Summit: Doctors' Day on the Hill</h3> <p>Closer to home, we encourage you to don your white coats and join your colleagues in Olympia on Jan. 22 for WSMA's yearly Legislative Summit. We will be joined by newly elected Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer. While the WSMA typically engages on hundreds of bills during the legislative session, we anticipate that for the Summit we'll focus on:</p> <ul> <li>Securing across-the-board Medicaid rate increases.</li> <li>Defending against inappropriate scope of practice expansions.</li> <li>Supporting our health care workforce by increasing education and training investments and promoting retention of existing workforce.</li> <li>Opposing tax increases on the physician community and other proposals that adversely impact the viability of physician practices.</li> <li>Issues related to public health.</li> </ul> <p>Be sure to <a href="[@]wsma/events/legislative_summit/wsma/events/wsma_legislative_summit/legislative_summit.aspx?hkey=795731a5-79ba-45b0-b78b-b9dfbfc336e5&amp;_zs=B3aFd1&amp;_zl=O0Ew9">register today for this event</a>, which is free for members. This summer, the Foundation's Wellness Action Committee concluded its work and has published its findings and resulting criteria in a new report, Thriving in Medicine: Cultivating Choice, Competence, and Community, which is now available to WSMA members and to anyone in health care wishing to implement change within their organization.</p> <h3>A wellness playbook</h3> <p>Thriving in Medicine: Cultivating Choice, Competence, and Community is a playbook for organizations to start, or to reevaluate and renew, processes to allow physicians and practitioners to thrive.</p> <p>Using self-determination theory as the psychological framework for addressing workplace wellness, the report provides evidence-based examples of what works for developing leadership support, empowering choices, providing skill enhancement, and fostering community. The report also contains a list of resources with point people to connect with to help members get started in that work.</p> <p>Download <a href="javascript://[Uploaded files/News and Publications/newsletters/2024/wsma-thriving-in-medicine-report.pdf]">Thriving in Medicine: Cultivating Choice, Competence, and Community</a>.</p> <h3>Dedicated resources needed</h3> <p>The report makes clear that workplace wellness also takes dedicated resources and support. Wellness programs that are supported with time and financial support are viewed most positively by employees, have better outcomes, and foster a greater sense that leadership supports joy in medicine.</p> <p>The WSMA Foundation Wellness Action Committee encourages all physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practitioners to read the report and use it as a resource, regardless of their leadership position.
