WSMA Legislative Summit

The 2020 Legislative Summit will take place in Olympia on Tuesday, Feb 25. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Columbia Room of the Legislative Building on the Capitol campus.

About the Summit

Attend the WSMA Legislative Summit and help us turn WSMA policy into action.

At this year's Summit, Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Washington's chief legal officer, will join us, along with other top Washington state officials and health care leaders, as we kick off an action-packed day on the Hill dedicated to advancing priority issues for physicians, physician assistants, and patients.

  • Hear from AG Ferguson and our other invited guest speakers who will share their perspectives on health care in Washington state and the political skirmishes ahead.
  • Learn which legislative and budget items the WSMA believes will benefit most from your support during the state legislative session.
  • Receive information on how to meet with your legislators and effectively deliver our message.

We know your time is valuable: We'll provide lunch and we'll handle scheduling your (optional) personal meetings with your state legislative delegation in the afternoon.

This free event provides a unique opportunity to make your voice heard by the people who are deliberating the policies, laws, and regulations in Olympia that impact the practice of medicine in Washington. You'll also have a chance to meet Washington's next generation of physicians, as we welcome medical student delegations from Washington State University's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, University of Washington's School of Medicine, and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences to the Summit.

Don't miss this chance to share your perspective with your local legislators and help amplify WSMA's legislative priorities—and don't forget to wear a white coat! The meeting is free for WSMA members—register today online.

Top Advocacy Issues

The 2020 Summit will focus on WSMA's top advocacy priorities, including*:

  • B&O tax surcharge – Repeal the tax on physicians and health care providers under House Bill 2158 from 2019.
  • Prior authorization – Collect data on insurer prior authorization practices and promote appropriate use criteria in lieu of prior authorization.
  • Telemedicine payment parity – Pass Senate Bill 5385, requiring services delivered via telemedicine to be reimbursed at the same rate as if they were delivered in-person.

Our legislative team will be on hand to brief you on the relevant bills needing your support and will provide messaging and tips on meeting with your legislators. Clinician expertise is crucial in informing legislators' decision-making—lending your support to one or more of these issues during the Summit can make a real difference.

*Issues subject to change, given the unpredictable nature of the state legislative session. The WSMA will keep you informed of any updates to our priority issues.
