THOMAS J. CURRY LEADERSHIP KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Tait Shanafelt, MD, is the chief wellness officer,
associate dean, and Jeanie and Stewart Richie Professor of Medicine at
Stanford University. He is an international thought leader and
researcher in the field of physician well-being and its implications
for quality of care. He has published over 450 peer reviewed
manuscripts and in 2018 was named by Time Magazine as one of the 50
most influential people in healthcare.
Chris Bundy, MD, MPH, is the executive medical
director of the Washington Physicians Health Program, president of the
Federation of State Physician Health Programs, and clinical associate
professor of psychiatry at the University of Washington School of
Medicine and Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Prior to joining
WPHP, he served as mental health service chief and chief of psychiatry
at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. He is board certified in
general and geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine. Dr. Bundy
draws on his experience as a health care leader, medical educator, and
recovering physician to support education and advocacy efforts related
to physician health and well-being.
Tammie Chang, MD, is a practicing pediatric hematology
oncologist and the medical director of provider wellness at MultiCare.
She is a trained leadership, wellness, and burnout coach. Dr. Chang is
the co-founder of Pink Coat, MD, the co-author of “How to Thrive as a
Woman Physician” and the author of “Boundaries for Women Physicians:
Love Your Life and Career in Medicine.”
Karen DeLorenzo is the director of leadership and
organizational development and wellness for MultiCare’s Provider
Enterprise. Karen has a bachelor of science degree in occupational
therapy and has completed coursework for a master of science in
occupational therapy, both from Colorado State University. Karen has
served as an adjunct faculty member for CSU teaching a course in
health care consulting and has done several other fun professional
activities such as teaching photography in the Baltic region, leading
strategic planning sessions and teaching leadership principles for a
China-based organization, and teaching leadership to inmates in the
Colorado Department of Corrections.
Stu Freed, MD, CEC, is an executive coach and teamwork
facilitator and was the chief medical officer for Confluence Health
and Wenatchee Valley Medical Group until 2020. Dr. Freed practiced
sports and family medicine. He has held seats on the board of trustees
of the WSMA and the board of directors of Wenatchee Valley Medical
Center. Dr. Freed received his Doctor of Medicine from the University
of Washington in Seattle. He is a certified physician executive and
has completed certificate programs in health care leadership and
Kaizen management.
David Garcia, MEd, is the assistant dean for health equity and inclusion, clinical faculty, and founder of the Office for Diversity, Health Justice, and Belonging at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine in Spokane. He grew up in the agricultural fields of Eastern Washington and is a product of many generous people who dedicated time and energy to develop and nurture him. David is an administrator, leadership and intercultural trainer, and consultant with over 15-years’ experience increasing access to education and social services for historically minoritized populations. In 2021, David was selected as one of nine experts in the country to advise and co-author the National Association for Diversity Officers in Higher Education Framework for Advancing Anti-Racism on Campus.
Edwin G. Lindo, JD, is the assistant dean for social
and health justice in the Office of Healthcare Equity and acting
assistant professor within the department of family medicine at the
University of Washington School of Medicine. He teaches, presents, and
writes on issues of race and racism within the field of medicine and
greater society. He is internationally recognized as a conscious voice
for racial and social justice.
David Logan, PhD, brings over two decades as an
executive, consultant, and professor to his role as co-founder and
head of transformation and leadership at Care4th. His work focuses on
creating personal and organizational alignment by developing and
mobilizing leaders. Dave’s past jobs include being the chief executive
officer of the California Medical Association’s wellness subsidiary,
where he worked on ending the epidemic of physician burnout; and chief
innovation officer and chief transformation officer of P3 Health
Partners, where he focused on physician engagement and practice
transformation. He is co-founder of CultureSync, a management
consulting firm focused on the intersection of strategy and culture.
Leo Sergio Morales, MD, is a professor of medicine and assistant dean with the Office for Healthcare Equity at UW Medicine in Seattle. He also serves as co-director for the Latino Center for Health, an interdisciplinary health sciences research center focusing on Latino health issues. Dr. Morales received his medical degree and master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington, and his doctorate in policy analysis from the Rand Graduate School. He completed an internship and residency in primary care internal medicine at the San Francisco General Hospital/University of California, San Francisco and a fellowship in primary care research at UCLA. Dr. Morales was a faculty member of the UCSF and UCLA schools of medicine and an investigator at the Group Health Research Institute prior to joining the University of Washington in 2014. Dr. Morales currently sees patients at the Latinx diabetes clinic, part of the UW Diabetes Institute.
Mirna Ramos-Diaz, MD, MA, FAAP, is the inaugural chief
diversity officer for Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences
and is an associate professor of pediatrics in the department of
family medicine. She received her medical degree from the University
of Miami School of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency at the
University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, is board certified in
pediatrics, and received a master’s degree in religious studies from
Gonzaga University. Dr. Ramos-Diaz completed the AAMC’s Healthcare
Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program in 2020 and the
University of San Diego Restorative Justice Certificate Program in
2022. She is the co-founder of Roots to Wings, a transformative
co-mentoring program whose purpose is to create an
educational/mentoring pathway for Indigenous and Latinx youth living
on Native Homelands to become STEM and health care professionals. She
is the founder of the Science Research Preparatory Yearlong Program
for Indigenous and Latinx students in Washington state funded by the
National Institutes of Health.
Ashleigh Rodriguez, MSN, MMM, brings over a decade of
population health experience to her role as co-founder and head of
innovation and strategy at Care4th. As an accomplished clinician and
senior health care leader, Ashleigh is committed to supporting
organizational leaders in delivering the Quadruple Aim (for our
clients in health care): better health outcomes, improved patient and
clinician experiences, and affordable care. A teacher at heart,
Ashleigh has taught at the University of Arizona and the University of
Southern California delivering leading edge coursework on leadership.
She is co-author of the industry shaping articles “Wellness-Centered
Leadership” (Academic Medicine, 2021) and “Well Leaders Lead Well”
(Social Science Research Network, 2020). A seasoned consultant, she
was responsible for finance and strategic partnerships at the
California Medical Association's wellness subsidiary.
Lee Rubin has a unique ability to understand and
articulate winning principles with tremendous clarity and practical
application that makes him a highly sought-after speaker and teacher.
Corporations, professional associations, and elite sports
organizations throughout the country have partnered with Lee to build
extraordinary teams. He holds a bachelor’s degree in speech
communications with a minor in business from Penn State University.
Rubin received a full athletic scholarship to play football for the
Nittany Lions. Lee not only emerged as a three-year starting free
safety, he also became a captain of the team. Lee was born in
Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Central New Jersey. Lee and his lovely
wife, Carmen, have been blessed with two beautiful daughters.
Makrina Shanbour, MD, is an advocate for physician
wellness at Confluence Health, leading the Physician Experience
Committee, serving as a peer supporter, a certified physician
development coach, and director of provider experience. She was raised
in Central Washington, attended Gonzaga University before heading to
the Midwest for medical school at Creighton University in Omaha and
residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas
City. Dr. Shanbour returned to Washington to practice internal
medicine at Rockwood Clinic for six years before transitioning to
hospital medicine in Wenatchee in 2010.
