WSMA Joins Chorus in Urging Payer Support of CPT 99072

The WSMA has joined the AMA and 127 other state medical associations and national medical specialty societies in urging public and private payers to "immediately implement and pay for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 99072 to compensate physician practices for the additional supplies and new staff activities required to provide safe patient care" during the COVID-19 public health emergency without patient cost-sharing.

Why it's important: As noted in the previous Membership Memo, physician practices in Washington state continue to experience severe economic hardship while incurring thousands of dollars in costs due to the pandemic, threatening the viability of this critical health care setting.

For more on this issue, see this AMA piece, "CMS, insurers should pay doctors for coronavirus protocols and PPE." The WSMA is looking to pursue legislation in the 2021 session to mandate commercial insurers provide reimbursement for the code, under appropriate circumstances.
