COVID-19's Impact on CME
The WSMA has received several questions from members regarding CME during the COVID-19 outbreak. Here's the guidance we've pulled together in response.
Can I claim credit for self-directed COVID-19 education?
You're quickly getting up to speed on COVID-19. Your self-directed educational efforts may qualify for AMA PRA Category 2 Credit ™ (more info). You may also qualify for Washington state Category II credit for self-directed live activities, such as a webinar or conference call; or Category V credit for independent learning, such as reading scientific materials (more info). To claim credit, keep a record of the following: 1) activity title or description (e.g. name of journal article), 2) subject or content area (e.g. COVID-19), 3) date(s) of participation and 4) amount of credit claimed (e.g. 1 hour = 1 credit).
When is a practitioner exempt from continuing education?
A physician may get a reprieve from or granted an extension of CME requirements due to illness or other extenuating circumstances. The Washington Medical Commission or its designee will determine when to waive the requirements or grant an extension. This may take a while, please submit information prior to your renewal date. Contact the office at email@example.com for further information.
