New opioid rules: WSMA introduces dot-phrase checklist to help practices adjust workflows

The WSMA is now offering an opioid prescribing workflow checklist to help practices succeed under new state rules governing opioid prescribing. The new checklist can be used manually or used to build prompts into your electronic health record (e.g. Epic dot phrase) in order to adjust practice workflow.

Important: While this checklist is intended to help update practice workflows, it will not ensure compliance with the requirements. The WSMA strongly urges all prescribers to read the new state guidelines to understand the requirements for each prescribing profession in detail (links to the rules can be found on the WSMA's Opioid Clinical Guidance webpage). If you have questions regarding the checklist, contact Jeb Shepard at jeb@wsma.org.

The new checklist joins the following WSMA resources, all of which can help practices and practitioners understand and comply with the new rules

  • Webinar: Understanding New State Opioid Prescribing Rules
Completion of this one-hour webinar will fulfill the new state requirement for continuing medical education on opioid prescribing. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
  • For care teamsPreparing Care Teams for New Opioid Rx Rule
This customizable PowerPoint template can help practice leaders educate their practice care teams, regardless of size, on the new rules.
  • Patient handouts (from the DOH website; look under Public/Patient)
The Department of Health offers patient handouts for all categories of pain patients (chronic, surgical, acute, and subacute) to satisfy a new state requirement for prescribers to inform patients of the risks, safe storage, and safe disposal of prescription opioids.
